Saffron (Crocus sativus) has the reputation of the being world’s most expensive spice.

Saffron threads are actually the stigmas of the crocus.. 250,000 crocuses are harvested to create a pound of saffron. Saffron is used in Spanish, Cuban, French and Indian cuisine and it is thought that Phoenician sailors brought saffron to Spain and is now used in paella. How it got to be a key ingredient in Swedish (saffron) breads is still a mystery to me!
